Background & Career Path
What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
My journey into law began at university, where I initially pursued a degree in criminology. I was drawn to subjects focusing on the law and legal practice, which inspired me to shift my focus towards a legal career.
My motivation has always been to help others, preferring to work as a lawyer for individuals rather than in the corporate sector. This combination of interest and purpose guided me to where I am today, committed to making a difference in people’s lives through law.
Where did you study law, and what are your academic qualifications?
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at Griffith University
- Diploma of Legal Practice at College of Law
Expertise & Specialisation
What areas of law do you specialise in, and what attracted you to these areas?
I specialise in compensation law, for people who’ve had an incident at work, on the road, or in a public place, as well as institutional abuse claims in both Queensland and New South Wales.
What professional achievement, or particular case outcome, are you most proud of?
Achieving admission as a solicitor is my proudest professional achievement, especially because I come from a family with no background in law.
Philosophy & Mentorship
What do you believe sets Trilby Misso apart from others?
The culture of continuous learning and development, and the open door policy provided by senior team members. This has given me the freedom to ask questions, exchange ideas with colleagues, and seek assistance whenever needed. My career trajectory within the firm demonstrates this supportive environment. Over the span of five years, I’ve progressed through five different roles, starting as a Junior Legal Assistant and advancing to Associate. I believe this culture also results in a much better experience for our clients.
What trends in the legal industry interest you the most?
I’m intrigued by how AI could transform the role of a lawyer in our space, potentially streamlining processes and making our work more efficient.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career in law?
Have an open mind and work really hard – if you don’t know what area of law you want to work in, then try anything and everything to see how you like it.
What professional attribute/attributes define an impactful, effective lawyer?
Having strong interpersonal skills is very important. You have to get to know the client, and understand their whole situation (including work, and family life as needed).
Being able to ask the right questions is really helpful, because you can use those details to get the best outcome for the client.
Thinking outside the box is also important. Since every claim is unique, finding key evidence and interpreting the facts often requires a creative approach.
Challenges & Learning
Can you talk about a significant challenge you’ve overcome in your career?
I found it challenging when starting institutional abuse work, mostly because it was a newer area of law for everyone. The limitation periods that stopped many people from pursuing a historical abuse claim were removed in 2017 for Queensland. This came with an influx of claims in the years following the limitation period removal. In the last few years, landmark decisions in the Courts have impacted this space significantly and there are still decisions being made in the High Court currently which will continue to change things. There are a lot of complexities in historical claims, making it particularly important to stay up to date with the changing landscape in this area.
On top of the complex legal landscape, dealing with different client personalities in this space can be challenging, especially where clients have psychiatric injuries. Client care is always a priority of mine. It’s about balancing your approach, so that you don’t re-traumatise anyone but also obtain adequate instructions in order to get the best possible outcome.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your tenure in law?
When running a claim, don’t take everything at face value. Do some more digging and investigation, and make sure you know the full picture.

I love the Trilby Misso team. We have a great team culture, where everyone gets along. The flexibility of our working hours and location is also great, as well as the variety of work.

What’s your favourite piece of fiction? This could be a book, movie, TV show, or something else.
My favourite TV show is Yellowstone.
What is one thing about you, that people would be surprised to know?
