    Background & Career Path

What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

Growing up I was inspired by my mother who was in the legal industry, and so my exposure to law at a young age influenced my decision to pursue a career in law. However, I first worked in hotel management for 10 years, before deciding to return to university and study law.

Where did you study law, and what are your academic qualifications?

I have tertiary qualifications in Law and Business from QUT and the University of Queensland respectively. My legal credentials include admission to the Roll of Legal Practitioners in both the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia. Additionally, I have completed the Practice Management Course accredited by the Queensland Law Society.

    Expertise & Specialisation

What areas of law do you specialise in, and what attracted you to these areas?

My expertise is in compensation law, advocating for individuals affected by workplace incidents, road accidents, or public space injuries. The study of tort law really resonated with me, an I was interested in the legal principles through the narratives of those adversely affected by others’ negligence. My strengths have always been working with people and resolving problems, rather than spending my days buried in paperwork.

What professional achievement, or particular case outcome, are you most proud of?

One of my most memorable career achievements occurred within the first year of being admitted as a legal practitioner. I was provided the opportunity to step in for a colleague on a claim that led me to appear in the District, Supreme, and High Court of Australia. It was a complex case, and I now look back and appreciate the rare opportunity I was given to appear in front of the Hight Court of Australia.

In terms of representing our clients, I would find it difficult to highlight a particular case. I feel a great sense of pride and purpose representing our clients and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to help them create a brighter future.

    Philosophy & Mentorship

What do you believe sets Trilby Misso apart from others?

The Trilby Misso name represents something really significant to Queenslanders. We’ve been around for more than sixty years, and I believe we’ve built a fantastic reputation of trust amongst our industry, our team, and of course the vast amount of Queenslanders we serve. Above all I’m very proud of the way Trilby Misso works together as a team – all united in our purpose to help.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in law?

I would recommend establishing a strong foundation to learning, and being mentored by those in the industry by being curious and asking questions. Most of all, listen to your clients, there is so much to learn from them.

If you enjoy it – it’s not hard work – so spend the time finding an area of law that ignites and fuels your passion and a law practice that aligns with your values.

What professional attribute/attributes define an impactful, effective lawyer?

I believe a great lawyer is competent, efficient, compassionate and always willing to learn.

    Challenges & Learning

Can you talk about a significant challenge you’ve overcome in your career?

There have been many challenges from a personal and professional perspective, and I imagine there always will be. I have learned to approach challenges with a pragmatic mindset.

    Personal Insights

What do you enjoy the most about life at Trilby Misso?

I’m passionate about the area of law we practice which makes it easy to come to work each day. First and foremost though, I enjoy the people I work with. It’s important to feel inspired and supported by the colleagues you spend so much time with.

Outside of law, what are your passions or interests?

I don’t have a lot of time to pursue passions outside of my busy life, working full-time, being a mother of three and helping to maintain our acreage property. I do love spending time watching my kids play sport or giving their best at any of their chosen hobbies, playing with our dogs and spending time with our horses. I wind down from the chaos listening to music with a glass of wine.

What’s your favourite piece of fiction? This could be a book, movie, TV show, or something else.

I’m really enjoying Outlander at the moment, and am looking forward to the next season.
