    Background & Career Path

What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

It all started with a business degree that I quickly realised wasn’t for me. However, during this time I discovered that I enjoyed working with contracts, which inspired me to study law.

Where did you study law, and what are your academic qualifications?

    • Bachelor of Business – Southern Cross University
    • Bachelor of Laws (Honours) – Southern Cross University
    • Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice – Bond University

    Expertise & Specialisation

What areas of law do you specialise in, and what attracted you to these areas?

I specialise in compensation law, for people who have had incidents at work, on the road, and in public places, as well as institutional abuse claims.

I find satisfaction in building a case and gathering evidence to support my clients’ claims. It’s about standing up for those who need it most and ensuring their voices are heard and validated.

This aspect of law not only challenges me but also brings a sense of accomplishment in making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

What professional achievement, or particular case outcome, are you most proud of?

I’ve had numerous memorable cases throughout my career, each significant in their own right. This makes it hard to single out just one.

However, what stands out most to me is the comprehensive support I’ve been able to provide. This holistic approach, ensuring justice, and facilitating closure has been the most fulfilling aspect of my work.

It’s not just about the legal victories but the real difference made in people’s lives that fills me with pride.

    Philosophy & Mentorship

What do you believe sets Trilby Misso apart from others?

At Trilby Misso, we ‘home grow’ our lawyers – examples of this are Drew and Shannon, who have taken on more and more responsibility across the firms as their careers have grown. We take care of our own.

For our clients, we go above and beyond to get the very best results for them. We go the extra mile no matter what that looks like. Our focus is our clients, not our fees.

What trends in the legal industry interest you the most?

The introduction of artificial intelligence is an interesting space to watch, particularly in institutional abuse law. You have to digest huge amounts of information from client records, so being able to review and summarise these things using AI may be really useful. However, there are some firms that are relying on it more than others for things like drafting documents and employing precedent flow.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in law?

Position yourself with someone experienced in the field, and learn on the ground with them. Soak it all in.

What professional attribute/attributes define an impactful, effective lawyer?

First and foremost, possessing a robust legal skillset is non-negotiable. This includes a deep understanding of legislation and relevant case law. It’s not just about knowing the law, it’s about creatively applying it and thinking outside the box to gather evidence.

Equally important are people skills. The ability to communicate effectively with clients, encouraging them to open up, and advocating vocally on their behalf is important.

    Challenges & Learning

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your tenure in law?

Trust your gut feeling on claims, and listen to it early when you are meeting a client. There have been occasions where I’ve taken on matters with certain doubts, and they always seem to come to fruition. Your “internal radar” will become more refined over time.
